Bag packing

Congratulations and a big thanks to everyone who took part in the bag packing at Morrisons last Saturday. Between the Scouts, Explorers and Leaders we managed to raise over £900 for camp funds – well worth the effort for 5½ hours!

Crewboree – or ‘Christmas; Aussie Style’!!!

Members of the 14th Grenoside and 25th Ecclesfield Scout Troops, and the District Explorers, took part in this year’s Crewboree. Some cracking weather on Sunday helped, but we were already having a fantastic time! The Scouts took part in activities including canoeing (or falling in the water –Liam), climbing, archery, zip line, kangaroo boxing (has to be seen to be believed) and numerous craft stalls. As usual favourite activities included poking fires; wetting people, especially Kit, Liam, Hazel (I will get my revenge) and Abbey – see photo!); and seeing how many inappropriate comments could be put in the ‘Crewboree Cryer’ – just what are ‘Kit’s Baps? Something to do with the trailer I think…

The sites were decorated in the ‘Aussie Christmas’ theme that was running throughout the camp. Ecco Scouts had a kangaroo swinging from a tree – shouldn’t that be a koala bear in the tree Chris? J Greno had a full beach scene on their site, including wind breaks, palm trees, a Christmas tree (with lights), body boards and even water and sand!

The discos in the evening proved popular, or was it just the chance for the boys to chat to the millions of Guides that were around?

Thanks to all the Leaders that took Don District Scouts and Explorers, members of the District that were on Crew or otherwise helping out, and especially to our sub-camp Leaders Margaret and Sylvia, who we have met somewhere before…

Austria Next Year!

We’re just starting our planning for next year’s camp – and we’re thinking about going to Austria.

The dates we’re looking at are Sunday 2^nd to Wednesday 12^th August 2009.

We’ll be stopping in Indoor Accommodation at a Scout Campsite just outside Salzburg. The camp is located next to a warm swimming lake, 1.5 km from the nearest village and 20km from Salzburg itself.

Activities planned include:

Swimming
Canoeing
Rowing
Hiking
Visits and trips
Cycling
White water rafting
High Ropes Course
Canyoning
Hydrospeed

We hope to be meeting lots of Scouts from other countries, and will be taking part in the ‘Environment’ and ‘Friendship’ badges. We’ll be doing a lot of hiking and cycling in the immediate vicinity of the campsite, visiting local attractions such as lakes, swimming pools and villages.

This time we intend to fly instead of using a coach; after last year can you blame us? We’re going for 10 nights instead of the usual 6 nights plus 3 days on a coach, so we reckon we’re getting good value for money.

The fully inclusive cost will be somewhere in the region of £550-£650; this depends on airfare costs. We will probably travel down to Stansted and fly directly to Salzburg; at the moment these are the cheapest fares - over £120 less than flying from Manchester even allowing for a coach hire to and from the airport. If airfares rise dramacticly in the next few months we do have the option of travelling by coach...

We are JUST gauging initial interest at the moment; we’re not collecting money yet! If you are interested in going can you let us know by next ASAP? If we get enough interest to go ahead we will require an initial deposit of £20, followed by another £30 a month later. A payment schedule will follow after that. Places will be strictly limited to 45!

Cubs and the Police Helicopter

Police Helicopter

No it didn’t come to take us away!

Thanks to the kindness of one of the Cub’s parents, who is a Police Officer on the ‘Copper Chopper’, we were able to take the Cubs to a visit at the (recently deceased) Sheffield Airport.

Despite numerous requests of ‘Can we get in it?’ Matt managed to keep his cool and didn’t fasten the Cubs to the rotors and fly away. Much to the Leaders disappointment! JJ

TREASURE HUNT & BARBECUE

Saturday 15^th July

At the Scout & Guide Headquarters, Saltbox Lane, Grenoside

A shortish Treasure Hunt around the village followed by a barbeque and games back at the Headquarters, from 6 p.m. until we get tired of playing football on the back field (normally about 9:30pm)!

Tickets are £5.00 for adults and £3.50 for children

Tickets are available from Kit Levesley or can be ordered from any section leader using the slip provided below.

Vegetarian meals are available if pre-ordered, and please remember to bring your own drinks!!

Ticket requests must be in by Friday 6^th July

St. George's Camp

St. George’s Camp

Everyone who attended had a great time at this camp – although some of the Scouts objected to having to go out hiking twice in one day!

The Cubs had a great time playing with fires (?) and competing in the Stag Trophy, and we all enjoyed the Camp Fire that followed the renewal of promises.

Especially Sarah and Jess from the Explorers, doing the Lappa Dance…

After the brilliant weather on Saturday it was a shame to wake up to rain on Sunday, but Danny, Dom and Kyle enjoyed their mud fightJ

Congratulations to both Scout Teams for completing the Night Hike without getting (too) lost, and coming 4^th and 8^th overall.

Crewboree

Crewboree 2008

Date: 6^th – 8^th June 2008

The ‘Crewboree’ is an event run every year by Hesley Wood, and this year we will be attending once again. The camp is aimed at Scouts, Guides, Explorers and Rangers – i.e. no pesky Beavers or Cubs!

Rough Programme

Friday – Arrive after tea, pitch tents, search for missing pegs etc, followed by a karaoke and disco run by Hesley staff.

Saturday – full of activities provided by the site, such as climbing, abseiling, archery, zip line, assault course, bouldering wall, orienteering, inflatables, buggies etc. In the evening there will be an ‘Aussie’ themed disco, with prizes for the best fancy dress!

Sunday - a day of competitions and challenges, with prizes up for grabs.

This camp is normally brilliant, as all the activities available would normally cost a fortune, but we are able to run this camp for just £30 (that’s £20 for Hesley, £10 for food) – or if you pay your £10 deposit by the 10^th of April then it will be only £28, as we receive a £2 early booking discount. The fee includes all the activities, camp fees, food etc – everything but for a small amount of spending money!

St. George’s Day Camp- 25^th – 27^th April

This years St. George’s Day Promise renewal will be during a campfire at Hesley Wood on Saturday 26^th April. The Cubs, Scouts and Explorer sections have decided to make a camp out of this event, with activities for each section. The Beavers will be up at Hesley for Saturday afternoon and evening.

Conditions of Membership

If you have not already done so you will soon be receiving 2 copies of the new ‘Conditions of Membership’ for your section, plus a copy of the new ‘Group Disciplinary Procedure’.

You or your parent/carer MUST sign both copies of the Conditions of Membership, and return one copy to your Leader.

These two documents will give you a clear idea about what’s expected of you as a member of Grenoside Scout Group, and what you can expect from your Leaders.

Good Friday

No Scouts this Friday, as the Leaders are taking a well deserved night off.

Instead there will be a session of outdoor cooking Friday lunchtime, from 11am to 2pm. Turn up, get a fire going for your group, then start cooking! We’ll supply the food; you supply yourselves in suitable clothing (weather wise and you will stink of smoke).

Of course if the weather does its usual Easter trick and it’s absolutely pouring down then we’ll have to migrate indoors, and we’ll use the camping stoves instead.

St. George's Day

As you may know, St. George is the patron saint of Scouting, as well as England. Baden-Powell chose him as he felt that the Saint George of legend set a good example of faith, courage and perseverance. St George's day is kept on the 23rd April and most Scouts throughout the country will hold some form of celebration on the nearest Sunday. At these events all members renew their promise, from the youngest Beaver to the oldest Leader (not Kit this time!).

This year we will be joining the rest of our District for a camp fire at Hesley Wood, on Saturday 26^th April.

As a bonus, there are additional activities for all sections.

Beavers: Activity sessions Saturday afternoon, camp fire, then go home.

Cubs: Saturday; take part in District Activity Competition, camp fire, then camp out for night.

Scouts: Camp for weekend. Saturday; work towards Outdoor Challenge Badge, Camp fire, then take part in District Night Hike. Sunday; backwoods cooking.

Leaders: Work hard all weekend, arrive home Sunday afternoon tired but happy, knowing they contributed towards making life a little bit better for a lot of people!

Christmas Fair

Thanks to everyone who attended the Christmas Fayre – we hope you had a great time. Unfortunately the strong winds meant we couldn’t put up the marquee outside, so we were even more cramped than usual inside!

We did, however, raise around £700 for Group funds – a fantastic amount.

A special thanks is due to all the Leaders and helpers who gave up their time to help run the event.

International Evening

An evening at Hesley Wood, to hear about the exploits of Don District’s Scouts and Explorers at this year’s Jamboree and in Italy, and of our plans for future International events.

Report from the members of the Jamboree Contingent, on their experiences at Hylands Park for the Centenary year Jamboree.
Report from the Explorers trip to Italy in the summer, including the delights of a night spent in a stationary coach when it wasn’t allowed through the Mont Blanc tunnel…
Our plans for the future; a trip to Iceland in 2008, Europe in 2009 or North America in 2010? The next international Jamboree in Sweden in 2011.

The evening will be held in the Howard Walker building, and is open to everyone – Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Explorers, Leaders, Committee members, families and friends etc.

The evening starts at 7:30pm, please wear full uniform.

Yes we’ve finally found a date for it! The parent’s evening/report back when we can spend the evening reminiscing on what a great time we had, the stupid comments we made, that fantastic coach we had etc…

Christmas Carol Service - Friday 7th December

Our annual Carol service will be held in St. Marks Church at 7:30pm on Friday 7^th December. Everyone welcome, members past and present, parents, grandparents, brother, sisters, uncles and aunties – or even if you’re just interested in what we’re doing! Refreshments will be served afterwards in the Church Hall.

Christmas Fair

This year’s Christmas Fair will be held on Saturday 24^th of November, starting at 10:30 am. There will be the lots of Christmas goodies for sale, as well as activities for the children, and of course Father Christmas will be present in his Grotto.

Stalls include bottle tombola, cake sales, toys, cards, wrapping paper, gifts, ‘Hama’ bead badges and decorating biscuits for Christmas. Refreshments will be available, including our famous bacon sandwiches - mmmm!

Donations of bottles, cakes and mince pies would be greatly appreciated.
